I was a little nervous about Florence + the Machine’s sophomore album. I was worried it would be near impossible to outdo their debut. The release of their first single, “What the Water Gave” did not dissuade these feelings. While the song is a good song, it’s only as good as the weakest songs from the debut.
"Shake It Out" has given me hope, though. This upbeat, although at times contrived ("it’s always darkest before the dawn"), single is infectious, dramatic and exquisitely layered - all the things we’ve come to both love and expect from Flo.
Get on it. The full length album, Ceremonials, is due to release on Halloween. Thank god.
The title track off St. Vincent’s forthcoming, Strange Mercy, is both haunting and charming, saccharine and melancholy. It is definitely a standout on what is her best and most consistent album to date.
